CALL FOR NOMINATIONS 2009
The official Call for Nominations 2008 will be sent out in early October 2008 both by electronic and print mediums throughout campus.
Monday, December 1, 2008 is the deadline for the Pre-proposal Stage One
A.D. White Professors-at-Large Professorships
We invite you to submit nominations for Cornell's distinguished
A.D. White Professors-at-Large Program. A.D. White Professors-at-Large are outstanding individuals of international distinction in
their fields, who are appointed to six year terms as non-resident
visiting professors at Cornell. A. D. White Professors-at-Large
need not be academics, though most are in fact affiliated with
teaching and research institutions. What is important is that
they combine distinction in a particular domain with broad
intellectual appeal across multiple disciplines and fields of study.
During the six-year tenure, A.D. White Professors typically make
two campus visits of ten days to two weeks each, in order to
interact with a broad range of faculty and students in both
formal and informal campus settings. Where appropriate, they
also deliver large public lectures or participate in public
programs of interest to our surrounding communities. The
logistics of each visit are handled by the Program Administrator,
though all arrangements should reflect the interests and
expertise of the faculty sponsors.
Nominations for A.D. White Professorships may be made by
individual faculty members, academic departments, or groups of
departments. The selection process is overseen by a faculty
Selection Committee which forwards the most plausible nomination
packages to the President and Trustees for approval. The
nomination process typically has two stages:
Pre-Proposal Letter: The first stage involves the submission of
a pre-proposal letter noting the nominee's qualifications and
achievements, along with a copy of the nominee's curriculum
vitae. The pre-proposal nomination letter should mention
faculty, departments, or programs in addition to those of the
primary sponsor or sponsor that have either agreed to support the
nomination or might reasonably be expected to do so. Pre-
proposal letters are due Monday December 1, 2008. Please
submit pre-proposals to Penny Nichols-Dietrich at adwhitepal@cornell.edu or send to the Program Office, 726 University
Avenue, Room 307, Cornell campus.
The Selection Committee will review pre-proposal nomination letters by the
end of December '08, and invite successful sponsors to submit a full
proposal expanding and strengthening the case for the nominee.
Full Proposal Package: The full proposal package should include
the nomination letter and additional letters of support from
Cornell faculty members in diverse disciplines. These additional
letters should discuss the faculty members' intentions to engage
the candidate in classes or program activities. Ideally, at this
stage sponsors should also obtain assurance from the nominee that
he or she would accept the position if appointed. Full proposal
packages are due in the Program Office by Monday, March 2, 2009.
The Selection Committee sometimes allows nominators to skip the
pre-proposal stage, and submit only the full package on March 2.
But most successful nominations emerge from the full two-stage
process.
The term of appointment for nominees approved by the President
and Trustees in Spring 2008 began effective July 1, 2008.
Additional information, including the composition of the
selection committee and details about compensation and terms of
appointment, can be found on the program website adwhiteprofessors.cornell.edu. Please contact the Program Administrator
Penny Nichols-Dietrich at adwhitepal@cornell.edu, or Professor Steven Strogatz, if you have any
questions about the Program or the Committee's selection process.
MORE PROFESSORSHIP DETAILS
Professors-at-Large are compensated on a pro-rated basis based on a salary of $14,000 per month. The Program pays for travel to and from the Ithaca campus (travel by air coach rate) arranged by the Professor-at-Large; housing, meals, and other in-residence expenses; as well as a reception for students and faculty during each visit.
The Program Office handles all the logistics of the visits. Faculty sponsors depend on the Program Administrator to provide such services as: scheduling visits; the obtaining of visas; provision of ID cards; payment of salary, travel reimbursement, and other expenses; organizing the schedule of activities; room scheduling and publicity; and the management of public lectures. The Program Administrator also assists Professors-at-Large directly while they are in residence to ensure that the visits go smoothly.
